Job Summary – Mission

Under the direction of the Director of Radioactive Services, the Field Radiation Protection Specialist is responsible for overseeing and coordinating field service operations, ensuring that all activities meet customer needs, company standards, and regulatory requirements. This position plays a critical role in maintaining safe, efficient, and high-quality service delivery while driving continuous improvements in field operations.

The successful candidate will ensure the proper handling, packaging, storage, and management of radioactive materials, with a primary focus on general and licensed source returns, smoke detectors, exit signs, and other materials permitted under Curie’s radioactive materials license. This role is essential to upholding Curie Environmental Services’ strong safety record while supporting the expansion of field services across Albuquerque and beyond.

This position requires extensive travel to customer sites throughout the United States and reports directly to the Director of Radioactive Services.

Key Responsibilities

Field Service Coordination

  • Coordinate field teams for the safe and compliant installation, maintenance, and removal of radioactive materials.
  • Ensure timely completion and proper documentation of service tasks, regulatory reports, and customer feedback.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing the handling and transportation of radioactive materials.
  • Ensure full compliance with Curie Environmental’s radioactive materials licenses and reciprocity agreements.
  • Support audit and inspection readiness through accurate record-keeping and timely reporting.

Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Oversight

  • Implement and follow radiation protection programs to safeguard personnel and the environment.
  • Monitor radiation exposure levels and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Client and Stakeholder Engagement – Collaborate closely with the Director of Radioactive Services to understand client needs and provide technical field support.

Logistics and Resource Management –

  • Manage inventory and usage tracking of radioactive materials, including ordering and ensuring proper disposal.
  • Coordinate with logistics partners for compliant and secure transportation of materials.

Quality Assurance – Monitor and evaluate the quality of field service tasks to ensure adherence to safety and operational standards.

Customer Relations – Serve as the primary point of contact for customer concerns, ensuring prompt resolution and strong client relationships.

Reporting and Documentation –

  • Maintain comprehensive records of all field activities, including job status, equipment use, and team performance.
  • Deliver regular operational reports and KPIs to management.

Continuous Improvement – Identify process inefficiencies and recommend or implement improvements to enhance service quality and reduce operational costs.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical science or related discipline (preferred) or equivalent work experience with industry-specific certifications such as:
  • NRRPT
  • DOE RCT Core
  • RPT NUF
  • Preferred Certifications:
  • DOT Class 7 Shipper Certification
  • ICAO/IATA Certification

Experience:

  • Direct experience in the nuclear industry is required (e.g., radiation protection, health physics consulting, or nuclear services involving industrial equipment such as radioactive source retrieval or X-ray machines).
  • Background in DOT Class 7 packaging, radiation protection programs, or similar roles in the nuclear sector.

Skills:

  • Solid understanding of radiation units of measure (US and SI systems).
  • Proficient in the use, selection, and limitations of basic radiation detection instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with industrial, medical, and research radionuclides and their properties.
  • Experience using LowTrac software
  • Knowledge of off-site sample collection and management practices
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Thorough understanding of industry regulations and safety standards

  • Willingness to travel nationally to support field service operations.
  • Ability to work in diverse environments including outdoor and industrial settings.
  • Flexibility to respond to urgent service needs outside of standard working hours.

Work Environment

Fully on-site position based in Albuquerque, NM. Must travel a 50-75% percent to customer sites throughout the US. When not travelling this person will be supporting the operations in Albuquerque.
