Job Description

The cell culture laboratory technician I is assigned to the cell culture laboratory at the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, a production environment operating under a Quality Management System certified to the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

Work in this lab supports the production, preservation, and characterization of cell lines for biomedical research. This role requires strict adherence to established protocols, documentation standards, and aseptic techniques to ensure the quality, consistency, and sterility of laboratory products. The technician will perform routine and specialized tasks related to the preparation of high-quality biological materials through hands-on work with blood, tissue, and established cell lines.

This position may eventually require participation in a weekend or holiday rotation to support the continuity of care for select cell types.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Work with cell lines using aseptic technique
  • Establish and maintain cell lines from blood or tissue
  • Create cell pellets for DNA/RNA extraction
  • Cryopreserve cell lines for long-term banking
  • Evaluate cell growth and sterility
  • Prepare and dispense growth media and cell culture reagents
  • Accurately maintain records of data and results
  • Assist with troubleshooting and minor repair of laboratory instruments
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager or team lead

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Cell/Molecular Biology, or a related scientific field that

includes laboratory coursework and hands-on training

Experience:

0-2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of academic and hands-on experience

Competencies Needed:

  • Technical proficiency with laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Effective communication and documentation abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Physical ability to stand, sit, kneel, stoop, or bend for prolonged periods in a lab setting while wearing PPE
  • Ability to lift and transport laboratory supplies and equipment (including media, reagents, waste materials, etc.) as required for daily operations.

The starting hourly rate for this role is $20/hour. The position is eligible for common health & welfare benefits, participation in our 403(b) plan, a 7% Month Contribution to a 401(a), 20 days of PTO, 10+ Paid Holidays, and 7 Paid Sick days per year. The role would be afforded a suite of employer paid life and disability insurance, that is available for all full-time employees.
